How the Program Works

The City's Pre-Approved ADU Plan Program has the following components:

1. Pre-approval of plans. Licensed architects, engineers, or designers will submit ADU building plans for review and pre-approval by the City.  The City will review the building plans to ensure compliance with the latest applicable state standards (Building, Health and Safety, Energy, Fire, etc.) and then "pre-approve" them for use by City property owners.

2. Publication of pre-approved plans.  Once the City pre-approves the ADU building plans, simple versions of the plans will be posted on this webpage (below) with the contact information of the professionals that produced the plans.  Property owners will then select from the available ADU designs and apply for construction permits from the City.

3. Pre-Approved ADU Plan construction permits. Once a property owner selects a pre-approved design from the City website, they will work with the professional that produced it to prepare the property-specific site plan and apply for construction permits from the City.
