Community Update: Flock Safety Automated License Plate Reader Cameras

Post Date:04/21/2026

The El Segundo Police Department would like to inform our community that we currently have fifteen Flock Safety Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras installed throughout the area.

ALPR technology is designed to enhance public safety by helping law enforcement identify and respond to criminal activity more efficiently. These cameras capture still images of vehicle license plates and compare them against national, state, and local databases. When a match is identified, officers are alerted in real time.

This technology can assist with:

  • Locating stolen vehicles
  • Identifying vehicles associated with wanted individuals
  • Supporting AMBER Alerts and missing person investigations
  • Assisting with active criminal investigations

It is important for the community to understand what ALPR cameras do—and do not do. These cameras:

  • Do not record video
  • Do not capture images of people or faces
  • Do not use facial recognition technology
  • Are not used for traffic enforcement or speeding violations
  • Data not shared for immigration enforcement purposes
  • Data not used for personal surveillance

All data collected is strictly regulated. Any information not related to an active criminal investigation is automatically deleted within 30 days, in accordance with California law and department policy.

ALPR system audits are conducted on a regular basis.

The Police Department remains committed to balancing public safety with individual privacy rights. The use of ALPR technology is governed by strict policies, limited access, audit requirements, and accountability measures. To view the current ALPR policy, click here.
