Robbery Suspects Arrested

On February 2, 2024, an armed robbery occurred in the City of El Segundo at the Hyatt Place in the 700 block of N. Nash St. where three suspects entered the victim’s hotel room and stole items, including a handgun, jewelry and currency. Two of the suspects were armed with handguns. After a thorough investigation and following up on multiple leads, detectives were able to identify two suspects, Gaston McWhinnie and George Young.

On March 7, 2024, with the assistance of SWAT teams from El Segundo PD, Hawthorne PD, Gardena PD and Redondo Beach PD, along with federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) task force, search warrants were served at the suspects’ residences in Rancho Cucamonga and Anaheim. During the search warrants, both suspects were arrested and evidence was located linking the suspects to the crime, including a replica handgun, narcotics, jewelry and clothing.

On March 11, 2024, the criminal case was presented to the LA County District Attorney’s Office, where multiple charges were filed on both suspects, including residential robbery, home invasion robbery, kidnapping, and residential burglary.

Detectives are actively following up on leads to locate additional victims, evidence and suspects, as it is believed these suspects are responsible for other violent crimes in the area. We continue working closely with our Law Enforcement partners and the District Attorney's Office in this investigation.

Any information regarding this case should be directed to Detective Phil Milam at (310) 524-2258 or pmilam@elsegundo.org. All media inquiries should be directed to Lt. Michael Sistoni (310) 524-2254 or msistoni@elsegundo.org.
